One of the questions I hear most often from families before our sessions at Ocean Isle Beach is some version of: “We have no idea what to wear — help!”
It is one of my favorite questions to answer, because honestly, getting this one thing right makes a noticeable difference in how your photos look and feel. So here is everything I share with families before we meet on the beach.
Honestly? Do not overthink this one. That is my biggest piece of advice.
When families ask me what to wear, my go-to answer is always: think about complementing each other rather than matching. Nobody needs to be in the same outfit — and your photos will actually be more interesting and alive when everyone brings something a little different to the frame.

Take the family in the photo above. Dad in a blue stripe, Mom in a flowing powder blue dress, the little one in a soft floral, the boy in a classic white button-up. Every piece is different — different pattern, different texture, different shade — and yet they look completely, effortlessly cohesive. That is the magic of complementing rather than matching.
Personally, I am always drawn to neutrals and blues — you will see that throughout a lot of the work I share. There is something about those tones that feels classic and timeless. Images like that can hang on your walls year-round, show up beautifully on holiday cards, and never feel dated years from now. But please do not let my personal love of a soft palette discourage you from colors that feel true to your family. What matters most is that you feel like yourselves.
A few things I always love to see: mixing textures like linen, cotton, and soft knits adds depth and contrast to images even within a simple neutral palette. Layers — a light cardigan, an overshirt, a bow in a little one’s hair — add visual interest without complicating anything. And a touch of pattern mixed with solids almost always photographs beautifully.
The goal is simple: pick colors and pieces that feel like your family, that you actually feel good in, and that have a loose connection to each other. The rest takes care of itself. I promise.
Some of my favorite color palettes for Ocean Isle Beach sessions:
Soft and coastal — whites, creams, soft blues, warm sandy tones, sage green. These tones complement the natural environment beautifully and photograph with a timeless, airy quality.
Warm and rich — terracotta, rust, deep olive, warm mustard. These work especially well for fall sessions and create a gorgeous contrast against the blue water and sky.
Classic and clean — navy, white, soft denim, tan. Always works, always timeless, especially for larger family groups where you want cohesion without overthinking it.
What to avoid: neon colors, very busy patterns, or logos. These tend to pull the eye away from faces and expressions — which are always the best part of any family photo.
A little texture adds visual interest without being distracting. Linen, light knits, soft florals, simple stripes — these all photograph beautifully at the beach. Flat, solid fabrics can sometimes feel a bit plain in outdoor light, so do not shy away from a bit of pattern or weave as long as it is subtle.
Loose and flowy fabrics move beautifully in the ocean breeze and feel comfortable for an active session with kids. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive, especially for little ones who will be running, jumping, and inevitably getting sandy.
Bare feet almost always photograph better than sandals at the beach — and kids love having permission to dig their toes in the sand. If you want to wear shoes for part of the session, we can always kick them off when we head closer to the water.
Consider layers for early morning sessions. Ocean Isle Beach mornings can be cool, especially earlier in the summer season. A simple linen overshirt or light cardigan that can be removed once we get going is a great idea.
If you are booking an extended family session with multiple households, I recommend having one person coordinate the overall palette so everyone is working from the same color family. It does not need to be perfectly orchestrated — just loosely aligned.
When you reach out to book, feel free to send me photos of what everyone is planning to wear. I am always happy to give a quick thumbs up or suggest a small swap before your session day.
If you are planning a family session during your Ocean Isle Beach vacation, I would love to hear from you. I serve families visiting OIB as well as neighboring Brunswick Islands communities including Holden Beach, Sunset Beach, and Oak Island.
Spots fill quickly during peak summer season — I always recommend reaching out early in your trip planning so we can get your date secured.
