One of the questions I hear most from families before our sessions is some version of: “Where should we meet you? Is there a specific spot we should book?”
And my answer almost always surprises them.
The best spot for your Ocean Isle Beach family photos? It is probably already right outside your rental door.
After years of photographing families on this island — many of them returning year after year — I have learned something that no list of “top photo locations” will ever tell you: the most beautiful and meaningful sessions almost never happen at a designated landmark. They happen on the stretch of beach your kids sprinted to the moment you arrived. The access path your family has walked every morning with coffee. The spot where your little one found her first shell.
That is the magic of Ocean Isle Beach, and it is exactly why I love photographing here.
For most families, I suggest a simple starting point: meet at your beach house or rental and walk together to the nearest beach access.
This approach works for so many reasons. First, it is effortless — no navigating to an unfamiliar parking lot, no coordinating across multiple cars with sandy, sunscreen-covered kids. You are already there. We just walk out the door and get started.
Second, it keeps the session feeling like vacation. When families are in a familiar, comfortable place, they relax faster. The kids are already in their element. Mom and Dad are not stressed about logistics. And relaxed families make for the most genuine, joyful photographs.
Third — and this is something I genuinely believe — you cannot really go wrong with most beach access points on Ocean Isle Beach. The island is beautiful from end to end. The light, the dunes, the shoreline — it is all there, no matter which stretch of sand we happen to be standing on. The location matters far less than the moment.
If your family is feeling a little adventurous and wants to explore beyond the nearest access, one of my favorite areas on the island is the eastern tip — locally known as The Pointe.
This stretch of shoreline has a character all its own. The landscape here is wilder and more dramatic than the main beach, shaped by years of natural coastal forces and an ongoing beach renourishment project that has brought in massive rock structures as part of the town’s effort to protect the eastern shoreline from erosion. The rocks have become something of an unofficial landmark — photographers and visitors alike have been drawn to their texture and presence, and the resulting images have a raw, coastal beauty that feels completely different from a traditional beach portrait.
A few things worth knowing before you plan on The Pointe: the area is subject to change with ongoing coastal management work, and conditions there can shift from season to season. I always recommend we check in on accessibility closer to your session date. When The Pointe is looking its best, it is absolutely worth the short drive to the east end of the island — but the beauty of OIB is that if conditions have changed, the rest of the island more than makes up for it.
After years of photographing families on Ocean Isle Beach, here is what I have learned actually matters when it comes to location:
The light matters more than the landmark. Early morning sessions give us soft, directional light that is flattering and beautiful no matter where we are standing. This is one of the biggest reasons I recommend morning sessions — the light does the heavy lifting, and the location simply becomes the backdrop.
Open beach beats busy beach. During peak summer weeks and holiday weekends, some of the more well-known beach access points can feel crowded by mid-morning. Meeting at your rental and walking to a quieter stretch means we are not competing with foot traffic and you feel like you have the whole ocean to yourselves.
Familiarity beats novelty. The spots that make families feel most at ease are almost always the ones they already know. Your regular access point, the sandbar your kids discovered on day two, the stretch where you watched the sunrise — those places carry meaning, and meaning shows up in photographs.

The single biggest factor in how your photos look and feel is not where we shoot — it is when. I typically recommend early morning sessions for Ocean Isle Beach families, especially during peak summer season. We beat the crowds, the light is at its most beautiful, and little ones are at their happiest and most energetic before a full day of sun and sand. We finish up photos first thing, and then your whole day is wide open to enjoy your vacation.
That said, every family is different, and afternoon and sunset sessions are always an option too. Whatever timing works best for your crew, we will make it work beautifully.
If you are planning a family session during your Ocean Isle Beach vacation, I would love to hear from you. I serve families visiting OIB as well as neighboring Brunswick Islands communities including Holden Beach, Sunset Beach, and Oak Island.
Spots fill quickly during peak summer season — I always recommend reaching out early in your trip planning so we can get your date secured.
